What Is Entailed in a Breast Lift?

A recent study by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that breast lifts have actually outpaced breast implants by a ratio of 2 to 1 in the U.S. Perhaps that is because some women went completely overboard with implants, and women now prefer to have a younger-looking – yet natural – body shape.

Also called a mastopexy, a breast lift will tighten and firm the breasts. It will bring them up and make them look more youthful.

Why Should I Get a Breast Lift?

A woman often loses her youthful shape after having a baby. Her breasts are larger while she’s breastfeeding, but the post-breastfeeding period can make her feel like she’s lost some of her natural beauty and elegance.

However, the shape of your bust can be addressed to help you feel more attractive and feminine once again. And the best part is that implants are not involved in a breast lift.

How Does a Breast Lift Work?

Done as an outpatient procedure, the process itself will take between one and three hours. The timing is based on the amount of work that is required, and whether you will receive a general or local anesthetic.

During a breast lift, excess skin will be removed on top of the breast in order to tighten the tissue and realign the nipples. The nipples will be pointed more upward and more forward than before. If the areola around the nipple is very large, the surgeon may reduce their size to make them look more natural again.

What to Expect After the Surgery

It is highly likely that you will need to wear a special support bra for several days so that your body can have a chance to heal properly. Your doctor will tell you to avoid any bending, straining, or lifting for the first few weeks following the procedure.

You might need to rest for quite a few days. You will probably also be advised to take about a week off of work in order to recuperate.

There will be scarring, but it will be minimal. The surgery will result in a thin, tiny line that will be visible for up to a year. The subtle scar may never disappear completely, but keep in mind that your shape will look so much better.
